Cristo Rey Kansas City has been a ministry partner of Christ Community for almost ten years. Over those ten years, the Christ Community congregation has mentored and tutored high school students and helped provide supplies for the annual grad pack drive given to the newly graduating high school students going off to college. Additionally, Christ Community participates in Cristo Rey's Work Study program by employing two students every year.
This year we have a unique opportunity in that one of our congregants, Dr. Dan Gurley, has agreed to dance during Cristo Rey's annual fundraiser, Dancing with the Kansas City Stars. Dan is one of eight dancers that will dance to "win" by raising the most funds for Cristo Rey.
You might be wondering what the school does with the funds that are raised. Here is the breakdown:
- It costs $14,200 per year to educate each student at Cristo Rey.
- Because most of these hard working families have incomes of $28,000 or less, they are only able to contribute $200 per year towards high school educations for their kids.
- Roughly half of that cost ($7,000) is earned by students as they work in various businesses and organizations throughout our city.
- This leaves a deficit of $7,000 per student and there are approximately 300 students enrolled at Cristo Rey each year.
If you would like to join Dan Gurley by "voting" for him (a.k.a. help raise funds for the Cristo Rey students!), please visit the CRISTO REY DANCING WITH THE KC STARS DONATION PAGE. Make sure to select Dr. Dan Gurley as the Star! Every $10 translates to one vote.
