welcome.

Welcome to Student Ministries at Christ Community’s Olathe Campus. Thank you for taking the time to stop by and learn more about who we are and what we are about. We aim to live out our church’s calling to be a caring family of multiplying disciples influencing our community and world for Jesus Christ.

Our staff and adult volunteers partner with families in helping students grow in their walk with Christ. We desire to offer programs that are not only fun and engaging but also theologically rich and challenging.

programming

Sunday Mornings

9:30 – 10:40am

Our weekly Sunday gathering time for students in 6th-12th grade (6th – 8th grade in Room 201 and 9th – 12th grade in Room 203); we meet during the second service from 9:30 – 10:40am. This meeting is discipleship based. We spend time looking at Scripture to discover more about our Creator, His Son, Christ, and His Kingdom, and how we, as His apprentices, are invited to help bring His Kingdom here on earth. We love seeing new faces and would love to have you join us. Come relax, play ping pong, foosball, or Xbox Kinect with your friends.

Small Groups

Wednesday Nights
6:30 – 8:30pm

This is our “Youth Group” time. It is a time to engage in community building, outreach, and address current cultural issues. Middle school students meet in Room 201 upstairs in the church, and high school students meet in Room 203. Come expecting some good food, good friends, good fun, and a chance to explore ways that we can more deeply understand who God created each of us to be and how we can each serve Him in the building of His kingdom.

Parents

Parents are seen as essential and critical to Student Ministries at Christ Community. Our desire is to come alongside and encourage you as a parent, not replace or in any way minimize your role in the life of your teenager. Statistics continue to indicate you are the most influential person in the life of your teen, even if you don’t feel like you are. The church has, at best, three hours a week with your teen. You have exponentially more time and influence. We desire to be additional caring adults in the life of your teen, and we want you to know that we are on your team and are here to help if we can.

Around Christ Community, you will hear the term “intergenerational ministry.” This term seeks to communicate our desire to bring all generations of our church to a place where they experience life together, not separately. We affirm the need for age-segmented and age-appropriate ministry, but not at the expense of getting our entire church body together. Thus, as parents, we want to encourage you to not only invest in and care for your own teenagers, but also the other teenagers in our body. We believe our teens will grow best when they have at least five adults who know their name and are investing in their lives. Will you be one of those five for a teenager other than your own? We are excited to be one of those five in the life of your teenager.

If you have questions about our ministry or how you might get involved as a parent, please contact the Student Ministries team. From helping in small ways, to getting in the trenches as a small group leader, we would love to have you on the team.

Resources

At Christ Community we truly believe that parents hold the primary role in discipling their children. We also believe that students play a vital role in the spiritual formation of their parents. That is why we, as a Student Ministries team, desire to encourage and equip both parents and students in your efforts of mutual discipleship. Below you will find a collection of books and websites that you may find helpful as you seek to grow in the likeness of Christ together.

Resources on Sex and Sexuality

Wendell Berry once said, “Sex, like any other necessary, precious, and volatile power that is commonly held, is everybody’s business.” Sex is a good and glorious gift from God. But like all of God’s gifts, it is easily distorted and twisted by sin. Sex has such a great deal of power both for good and for evil. It is for this reason that we have decided to keep a list of resources specifically devoted to this subject on this resource page. Below, you will find a list of resources for parents and students on the subject of sex and sexuality.

Books for Parents

Books for Parents

Hooked: New Science on How Casual Sex Is Affecting Our Children by Joe McIlhaney Jr., and Freda McKissic Bush.
This is one of the best book we have read, thus far, on the subject of sexuality and adolescence. It is a well-researched book that is very accessible for both teens and adults. We have found it very insightful and would strongly recommend you read this book.

So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can do to Protect Their Kids by Diane E. Levin and Jean Kilbourne
A fabulous commentary on the over-sexualized culture that our children are growing up in and how it is impacting their sexual development. While it is a great book on how to talk to your children about sex, there is a great deal on practical information for parents on how to guide and protect their children in a sex-saturated culture.

Real Sex: The Naked Truth about Chastity by Lauren Winner
This is a phenomenal book for both parents and older teenagers. It approaches the subject of sex in a much more holistic sense, as well as in a communal sense.

Wired for Intimacy: How Pornography Hijacks the Male Brain by William Struthers
While this may not be all that helpful for teenagers, it is a great resource on understanding how pornography hijacks our brain and distorts the way we think about sex.

Teaching Your Child Healthy Sexuality: A Biblical Approach to Prepare Them for Life by Jim Burns
This book is similar to The Purity Code, but addresses you, as the parent, giving valuable ideas on how to address some of the biggest sexual issues our teenagers are facing today.

Sex, Dating and Relationships by Gerald Hiestand
You will find some very clear, practical, and more importantly biblical wisdom in this book. This may be a great book for students and parents to read through together.

Washed and Waiting: Reflections on Christian Faithfulness and Homosexuality by Wesley Hill
The subject of homosexuality is increasingly a significant topic of conversation. With so many voices and opinions on the issue out there, Wesley Hill (a gay Christian) provides some helpful words on how the church can begin to think and talk about it in ways that are both faithful to Scripture and helpful to those with questions and struggles.

Books for Students

Books for Students

Sex: It’s Worth Waiting For by Greg Speck
Greg Speck has been doing youth ministry for more than 30 years and has a remarkable ability to connect with students on difficult topics in ways that are relevant and helpful. This is a great read for any teenager who has questions about sex.

Sex Has a Price Tag: Discussions About Sexuality, Spirituality and Self Respect by Pam Stenzel
Pam Stenzel is not shy about the subject of teenage sexuality. She is very blunt, but also very clear. This book is addressed to both boys and girls. You will find personal testimonies, medical stats and practical solutions in this book.

Pure Eyes: A Man’s Guide to Sexual Integrity by Craig Gross and Steven Luff
Craig Gross is the founder of XXXChurch, which is a ministry to people who struggle with pornography and sex addiction, as well as to people in the sex industry. This is a great book designed for men and the struggles they face to maintain sexual purity.

Pure Heart: A Woman’s Guide to Sexual Integrity by Shellie Warren
This is an official resource of XXXChurch and is the female counterpart to Pure Eyes. This book addresses real and honest issues that women face in regards to sexual temptation and maintaining sexual purity.

With so many voices and opinions on the issue out there, Wesley Hill (a gay Christian) provides some helpful words on how the church can begin to think and talk about it in ways that are both faithful to Scripture and helpful to those with questions and struggles.

Office Help: Whether you can come in for a couple hours each week or just a couple of hours at a time, we can use your help to accomplish some of our projects. From stuffing envelopes, to making copies, to managing some of our weekly needs, we have a place for you.

Small Group  Leaders: These adults lead small groups comprised of students during our  Sunday and Wednesday ministries. These group leaders will journey with a mixed gender group of either middle or high school ages.

Team Players: We are always looking for parents willing to help us with physical needs. From driving students for various church activities, to hosting small groups in your basement, to shopping for special events, we need parents who are willing to take on some of these “behind the scenes” roles. Join us one time or on a regular basis, the choice is yours.
