children’s ministries
leawood

welcome.

Childhood is an adventure.  If you’re looking for a place where kids are loved unconditionally, protected uncompromisingly, and taught the truths of the Bible creatively, then come join us on Sundays! Our spaces have adults, youth, and children actively participating side by side in an intergenerational experience as they learn about the Big God Story and their place in it.

As parents journey with their children on this adventure, we want to equip and support them by creating spaces and moments to inspire them to model a life of faith. We believe parents are the primary spiritual influence on their children’s lives, so we desire to resource families to engage in conversations of faith with their kids.

Being known by God requires response! When you enter our spaces, you’ll immediately see ways to respond to who God is through prayer, interactive stations, and other areas that encourage kids to know God and be known by Him.

Parents

We are so glad you are curious to learn more about our Children’s Ministries. First and foremost, we want to make you feel at home. Christ Community is a caring family of families. We hope your family will become more connected to our family. If you have any questions we would love to meet with you and share more over coffee.

We believe to grow spiritually healthy families, parents must be equipped to be the primary nurturers of their kid’s faith (Deuteronomy 6), that the faith community needs to play a supportive role in this endeavor (Ephesians 4), and that we must remain dependent on the Holy Spirit to bring about spiritual growth and formation when and as he chooses (Philippians 2:13).

Our parent rhythm starts in the fall with Parenting Matters.  This course inspires and prepares parents for the role of spiritual leader in their home.  It is also a place for parents at different stages to connect and share. This course releases parents from the world’s idea of perfect parenting and perfect behaviors from our kids,  to recognizing God’s perfect role as parent and preparing their child for a life in relationship to him. Throughout the school year, we host a variety of family events focused on connecting and equipping families through teaching and fun.  We also offer a special transition course for our 5th graders and their parents introducing them to youth ministries in the spring. Throughout the summer we host various family events and participate at Youthfront Summer Camp (3rd-5th grade).

Investing in the lives of our families is our joy! God has given his people a great story to share. We hope you will allow us to partner with your family in your home to share in His story.  Every week we will engage children in the language, activities, and story you are sharing at home in fresh ways.

Nursery (Birth – 2 years)

Welcome! The nursery is the perfect space for our youngest family members.  Here the babies are prayed for and given loving care.  Your child will be rocked, read to, feed, strolled and played with to ensure s/he is content.  Please stop by and see the smiles as each child first experiences Christ through the love of our leaders.

The nursery is split into three defined developmental stages: Infants, Crawlers, and Toddlers. The nursery will be open 10 minutes prior to regular church services and approximately 10 minutes after church services.

Blessing

A blessing is spoken over all children, birth- 5th grade. A blessing is offered in order to ask God’s Spirit to overflow in such a way to bless others, while it can also be prayed over a child for the purpose of declaring God’s protection, joy or wisdom.

Safety

  • During check-in,we use an alphanumeric labeling system for the safety of our families.
  • Two code labels are printed for the adult, this will need to be presented at pick-up.
  • Children may only be picked up by an adult with the matching label.
  • Our areas are secured and require anyone present during service to have label.
  • More information available here

  • Any child on antibiotics must have taken it for at least 24 hours before attending.
  • Leaders will not administer any medication.

What to Bring:

When packing a diaper bag for your child, please include the following items

  • Diapers, a complete change of clothes, and a bottle or sippy cup.

Early Childhood (2-years – Kindergarten)

Welcome to Early Childhood ministry at Christ Community! Each week, our caring leaders build spiritual truths into the lives of our children. Biblically based, fun, and age appropriate learning occurs in classes defined by birth dates.

Bible Based Curriculum

  • We use a curriculum called Tru that tells the Big God Story.
  • Tru Blessings (2s & 3s)
    • Every year the Big God Story narrative is told from creation to missionary journeys, beginning in the fall.
    • At this early age, repetition is essential, so each bible story is shared for two weeks.
  • TRU Wonder (4/5s & Ks)
    • Every year the Big God Story narrative is told from creation to missionary journeys, beginning in the fall.
    • TRU Wonder, piques the natural curiosity of children and invites the wonder of who God is.
    • TRU Wonder is a two year curriculum, so different stories are told over the years.
  • For more information about this curriculum, click here

Respond and Blessing

Respond

After Storytelling, time is carved out for your child to respond in worship to what they’ve heard. This creates space to speak to God and listen for His voice. They can visit a Worship Response Station, pray, sing, or do an activity together. There are also places in our Children’s Ministry community spaces for families to respond together.

A blessing is spoken over all children, birth- 5th grade. A blessing is offered in order to ask God’s Spirit to overflow in such a way to bless others, while it can also be prayed over a child for the purpose of declaring God’s protection, joy or wisdom.

Safety

Safety

In order for a child to feel comfortable in a space, they must first know they are safe physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The safety of your child is a priority to us. This includes a computer check-in system, background checking all our adult volunteers, and securing our Children’s Ministries area during services.

Legacy Milestones

The passing of a baton of faith from one generation to the next is the role and responsibility of spiritual parents. It is our joy as a faith community to partner with and equip families in their role as spiritual nurturers of their children’s faith and celebrate milestones in the parent-child spiritual formation journey.

The following legacy milestones are recognized and celebrated:

  • Child Dedication Service
  • 1st Grade Bibles Presentation
  • Baptism and Faith Commitment
  • 5th Grade Recognition

The church equips parents by hosting orientations, parents’ meetings, family nights, and providing materials for families to use in the home. Find out out more about each milestone by selecting the topic below.

Child Dedication

Child Dedication

Fewer things are more important to us than our children. God has blessed you with a child and the responsibility to be the primary nurturer of their faith. Alone, this task could be daunting. As a church family, we are here to support, equip and encourage parents as they grow in faith and pass it along to their child.

Child dedication is a wonderful milestone celebrating identity and faith community. Each child is created in God’s image and they bear His fingerprint. Child dedication embraces parenting yoked with God. It establishes a larger faith community who will surround your family, speak words of encouragement, and partner in raising your child.

In preparation for this important faith milestone, we want to gather for a class. We invite you to share your faith stories, your parenting desires and hopes, and come alongside you with prayer and resources for the parenting journey. We long for this to be a meaningful time for you as parents, growing in relationships with other parents,l and with the Children’s Ministries team at Christ Community.

So, here’s how it works:

Step 1: Child Dedication sign-up

Register for the class online through the calendar or in the Weekly Update email. Dinner and childcare are available the evening of the child dedication class.

Step 2:  Child Dedication orientation

Join other parents for the celebration and encouragement as we explain and answer any questions you may have about child dedication and explore the resources available for parents through Christ Community.

Step 3: Child Dedication Service

Child Dedication will be part of our Sunday morning worship service. Invite your family and friends to join you in service for this special milestone.

1st Grade Bibles Presentation

 1st Grade Bibles

1st Grade marks a big transition at Christ Community from the Early Childhood Department to the Elementary Department! This is a change for both children and their parents. We look forward to celebrating this Legacy Milestone together as a congregation during our Sunday worship services in the fall.

During this important milestone moment parents present their 1st  Graders with a Bible for Elementary Children’s Ministries. This is a moment to pause as parents and the church to reaffirm the responsibilities of spiritual training in the home and of supporting families in our stewardship.

It is a great honor to partner with our first graders, and the Children’s Ministries staff looks forward to watching how God will continue to grow them up for His glory. It is our prayer your child will continue to grow in biblical knowledge and relationship with the Holy Spirit as their major attitudes of life are formed. As they reach this new horizon on their journey, we will continue to pray they remember the basic foundations parents have established as the spiritual leaders in your child’s life and home.

Faith Commitment and Baptism

Baptism Classes

The beauty of baptism is that you enter into a family. Listen to these poetic words, written centuries ago in the Book of Common Prayer.

There is one Body and one Spirit;

There is one hope in God’s call to us;

One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism;

One God and Father of All.

As your child prayerfully considers stepping into the family of God, you remain essential to their faith. It has been through your modeling, serving, love, respect, and inclusion of your family in a faith community that has led them to desire claiming Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior.

As the closest witnesses of faith for your child, we feel called to inspire, equip and support your family. When your child expresses the desire to be baptized, we invite you to fill out the Children’s Baptism Interest form. A Children’s Ministries leader will then schedule an evening to bring dinner and share in the baptism conversation with your family. Baptism dinners in the family home will be scheduled a month prior to the baptism dates.

We will also give your family multiple resources that will continue to bring vibrancy to your family’s faith. We encourage you and your child to consider inviting a few special guests to the dinner that have been part of your child’s spiritual journey: a Sunday School leader, a family friend, or a grandparent. We are blessed to be on a faith journey with your child and your family. Prior to our baptism visit in your home, we invite you to share with your child this salvation path. Invite them to tell you about how they are feeling. Remind them this is the start of a journey, that following Jesus is a lifelong pursuit. Most of all, relay to them that baptism is an outward sign of an inward change and a forever relationship with God.

5th Grade Recognition

5th Grade Recognition

5th Grade Recognition is a service designed to celebrate, as a church family, a legacy milestone in a 5th Grader’s faith journey. This is an important time for our students and their families as they transition from 5th Grade to 6th Grade, in many cases, from elementary school to middle school, and from Children’s Ministries to Middle School Ministries.

A strong and committed faith journey happens with the successful passing of a baton of faith, in the home—from parent to child—and a baton of responsibility for partnering with the home as a church—from Children’s Ministries to Middle School Ministries. This service celebrates both.

Children’s Ministries Volunteer Opportunities

Do you have a special talent (storytelling, singing, playing an instrument), quirk (baby whisperer, tv announcer voice, hiccuping the alphabet), master organizer (alphabetizing, sticker gun expert, sorting, sifting, cutting and copying) or gift (game master, Bible guru, greeting passion, skillful planning) that would be useful to share with the Children’s Ministries team? Having adults and youth share in the lives of our children is essential.  If you are interested in volunteering contact Dawn Heckert.

On-Call for Children’s Ministries

From week to week and service to service, our Early Childhood Children’s Ministries numbers are always changing. To make sure we always have enough leaders, we are creating an On-Call team who are willing to respond to a Sunday morning code for help. For details and to be involved, contact Dawn Heckert.
